I’ve been skittering on the edge of foreclosure or short sale hell for years, yet my credit has dwelled in the “good” range, despite not paying my mortgage for long periods of time. At last my credit report reflects the fact that my mortgage was paid off several weeks ago. I was so happy to see that, I did a happy dance—until I noticed that paying off my mortgage dropped my credit 30 points! I’m bummed. So, it’s better not to pay my bills than to pay off my biggest creditor? This is one strange world we live in.
